People laugh at me when I tell them about my “dream home” concept – a loft in which the entire flat floor opens up to reveal beds, tables, sofas, and storage. In last Sunday’s New York Times Magazine, however, there is a profile of a house built around a very similar concept. Russian profile (good pictures, but no English text).

Where the suitcase house located?
It’s in Beijing. Here’s another link.
There are actually a good number of architects and designers who are interested in this same idea of folding interiors–hiding utility in a space located somewhere between “interior” and “exterior”. You might find the work of Andrew Wexler interesting, and take a look at Eva Prats and Ricardo Flores’ “House in a Suitcase”. Their designs are nowhere near as elegant, however all of these designers consider not just the phenomenon of an unfolding interior, but also the intersticial spaces that the furniture leaves behind when out of its container. Thoughts for you to consider before you hire your architect!
